Migrating a virtual machine from third-party applications to Parallels Desktop using Transporter

APPLIES TO:
  • Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac
  • Parallels Desktop 4 for Mac
  • Parallels Desktop 3 for Mac

Resolution

For migrating third-party vendor virtual machine with help of Parallels Transporter utility for further usage with Parallels Desktop 4 the following steps should be taken:

1. Make sure, that Parallels Transporter is installed on the Mac where Parallels Desktop 4 is running. It should be installed automatically alongside of Parallels Desktop and placed to the folder Applications/Parallels
2. For Windows and Linux, Parallels Transporter is provided as a separate package containing Parallels Transporter and Parallels Transporter Agent (this utility is required for the remote migration). You can download the most recent version of Parallels Transporter package from Parallels Download Center:

 http://www.parallels.com/download/desktop/

 3. The Parallels Transporter package contains Parallels Transporter and Parallels Transporter Agent which are installed simultaneously during Parallels Transporter installation.

4. Before migrating a virtual machine, you should open Parallels Transporter on the computer which will store the resulting virtual machine and open Parallels Transporter Agent on the machine to be migrated.

Note: Before migrating a third-party virtual machine, you need to remove the virtualization utilities from it.

To start Parallels Transporter in Mac OS X:

  1. In the Finder, open the Applications/Parallels/ folder.
  2. Double-click the Parallels Transporter application.

To start Parallels Transporter Agent in Windows:

  1. Click the Windows Start menu.
  2. From the Start menu, choose All Programs > Parallels > Parallels Transporter Agent.

To start Parallels Transporter in Linux:

1.   Start a terminal.

2.   Enter the following command:

parallels_transporter

5. Parallels Transporter supports two migration modes: the Express mode and the Advanced mode. The Express migration mode enables you to quickly convert your third-party virtual machine to a Parallels virtual machine. In this mode, Parallels Transporter uses predefined settings, and you need to provide only the most essential information. The Advanced migration mode enables you to customize the migration settings. The detailed description of Advanced mode migration procedure is given here:

6. To be able to work with the resulting virtual machine in Parallels Desktop, you should open it in Parallels Desktop and change some of its configuration settings: specify the path to the Parallels Tools image and connect the floppy disk image to your virtual machine. Check all the other settings and make sure that they fit your requirements.

Specifying the Path to the Parallels Tools Image

   1. Open Virtual Machine Configuration dialog by choosing Configure from the Virtual Machine menu.
   2. In the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog, choose the CD/DVD-ROM 1 option.
   3. Enable the Use image file option and locate the Parallels Tools image file. The default location on Mac for Windows and Linux guest OS’s is Macintosh HD -> Library -> Parallels -> Tools.

Connecting the Floppy Disk Image to Your Virtual Machine

   1. In the Virtual Machine Configuration dialog, choose the Disk option.
   2. Connect a floppy disk image to your virtual machine by specifying the disk image file name in the Image File field.
